Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Dretakis
Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Dretakis has extensive experience and uses modern techniques. He maintains a practice in Athens, Maroussi and Glyfada.

He graduated from Athens College in 1983 and completed his medical studies at the Medical School of the University of Patras in 1990. He specialized in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Hospital of Crete, one of the most distinguished orthopaedic clinics in Greece. In 1997, he was awarded his PhD with distinction from the University of Crete, with a research focus on hip fractures and osteoporosis.
As part of his advanced subspecialty training, he further trained and worked in the United Kingdom from 1996 to 2000 at Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Avon Orthopaedic Centre. His main areas of focus included hip surgery as well as upper and lower limb surgery. During this period, he was awarded two scholarships by the Hellenic Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (HAOST). In 1997, he represented Greece in Spain as part of a travelling fellowship program, delivering educational lectures and participating in clinical activities at major orthopaedic centers.
From 2006 to 2016, he served as Director of Orthopaedics at Metropolitan Hospital, where he founded the Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases Unit, which evolved into a national reference center in Greece.
In 2011, he became the first Greek physician to be trained and certified in robotic orthopaedic hip and knee surgery in the United States, completing specialized training in leading hospitals in Florida and Chicago. In 2014, he introduced robotic orthopaedic surgery to Greece at Metropolitan Hospital. Since 2015, he has been active as an International Robotic Surgery Trainer job based in the United States, providing training and certification to physicians in European research centers, the Middle East, Israel, Russia, and the USA.
Since 2017, he has served as Director of the 2nd Orthopaedic Clinic at HYGEIA Hospital. In 2019, he assumed responsibility for the official scientific educational program for Orthopaedic Surgeons at HYGEIA Hospital,
In 2021, he founded the Athens Orthopaedic Institute, a modern Orthopaedic Center based at HYGEIA Hospital. The Institute’s mission is to provide personalized orthopaedic care grounded in the most advanced scientific methods, to offer systematic training to Medical students and Orthopaedic Surgeons from around the world in robotic surgery, and to promote the development and advancement of scientific research.
Dr. Dretakis’ scientific work includes 30 + original publications in high-impact international scientific journals in the United States and Europe. These publications are indexed in Index Medicus and have received more than 2,000 scientific citations. In addition, he has authored 35 articles in Greek scientific journals and has presented more than 150 papers at national and international congresses. His main research interests focus on robotic orthopaedic surgery, hip fractures, osteoporosis, joint replacement surgery, and Vitamin D.
As part of his research activity, he has served as principal investigator in major multicenter clinical studies, including the EPOS, Meloxicam, and EFOS/ExFOS trials. He is also the author of a textbook on sports injuries, which has been distributed to Medical School students at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens since 2003. Since 2005, he has consistently attended the annual educational program of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in the United States with CME credits from 2006 to now.
In recognition of his scientific work, he has been listed in the international scientific Who’s Who in the United States since 1999. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the General Medical Council (GMC), the European Hip Society, the Hellenic Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (HAOST), and the Hellenic Society for the Study of Bone Metabolism (HSSBM). He is fluent in English, French, and Italian.
Dr. Konstantinos Dretakis was born in Athens in 1965. He is married and the father of three children. He has extensive clinical, academic, and international experience in the field of orthopaedic surgery, with particular expertise in robotic hip and knee surgery, the management of hip fractures, as well as in their diagnosis and treatment.
